State Tuition Waiver (STW)

This is for FULL-TIME students only (12+ credit hours).
STW does NOT include Summer semester, it is for Fall and/or Spring only

This is for full-time students (12-18 credit hours) attending a Utah State public college or university:

  • Salt Lake Community College
  • Snow College
  • Southern Utah University
  • University of Utah
  • Utah State University
  • Utah Tech University
  • Utah Valley University
  • Weber State University

Eligibility

  • Service member must be working on first associate or bachelor's degree and attend full-time
  • Applicants must have a minimum 2.0 GPA (USU requires a minimum of 2.75 GPA)
  • Service member must apply between 1 JAN to 30 APR for the following school year
  • STW waives base tuition for either one or two semesters. STW does not cover fees, but recipients may apply for STA for fees prior to the start of each semester.

How to Apply for STW:

The STW packet requires the completed portal application, a current unofficial transcript (high school if this is your first semester of college), and a short essay (1 page, typed, double-spaced) outlining academic and career plans.

Important Information

  • The STW is a Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) sponsored waiver program allowing the president of each state institution to waive all of the tuition for national guard members. From a student perspective, scholarships and Waivers are the same; both are awards that reduce the amount of tuition that the student has to pay our of pocket. It is the only Utah National Guard program that requires full-time enrollment in a Utah public school. Details can be found on the Utah State Legislature website.
  • For official notification of acceptance for the STW program, in some cases, students MUST accept the scholarship through their official school email.
