Command of the Utah Army National Guard's 300th Military Intelligence Brigade (Linguist) was transferred from Col. Scott Chalmers to Lt. Col. John Isom during a change of command ceremony June 6, 2026 at Camp W.G. Williams, Utah.

This ceremony also marked the retirement of Chalmers and celebrated his career and the impact he had on the 300th MI during his time in command.

Chalmers was commended by his colleagues for improvements that came to the brigade through his accomplishments.

“His leadership has been not only inspirational, but it has been strategic as well,” said Col. Andrew Owens, who presided over this change of command in his first act as the assistant adjutant general of the Utah Army National Guard.

Owens listed numerous organizations which have strong relationships with the 300th MI, including INSCOM (Intelligence and Security Command), the NSA, and the DEA. “That is a direct reflection of the work and effort that Col. Chalmers has brought to the table day in and day out,” he said.

Chalmers' successor also had high praise. “You've guided the 300th through countless challenges, through amazing wins and in support of demanding missions around the globe,” said Isom. “That's a legacy that will last far beyond today and will sustain our partners and our fight for many, many years to come.”

Brig. Gen. Robert Brown, Eighth Army deputy commanding general, operations, represented the command at the 75th Anniversary Battle of Gapyeong Memorial Service in Gapyeong, South Korea, May 26. The ceremony paid tribute to the bravery and sacrifice of soldiers of the 대한민국 육군 (Republic of Korea Army), 27th British Commonwealth Infantry Brigade, and 213th Field Artillery Battalion, who held the line against overwhelming odds in April 1951.

Representatives from the state of Utah were on hand as the 213th Field Artillery Battalion is a Utah National Guard unit that was deployed during the Korean War. U.S. Representative Celeste Maloy of Utah’s 2nd Congressional District provided remarks along with Brown, and Brig. Gen. Shawn Fuellenbach, assistant adjutant general, Utah National Guard, also was in attendance.

Communist forces launched their Spring Offensive on April 22, 1951, a massive counterattack with the primary goal of recapturing Seoul. One axis of their assault ran through the Kap’yong, now Gapyeong, Valley, which was defended by ROK Army troops. Faced with overwhelming odds, the ROK forces were pushed back. Following the collapse, the 27th British Commonwealth Infantry Brigade, was rushed to the Gapyeong Valley to establish a defensive line.

Despite being heavily outnumbered and cut off from supplies, British Commonwealth forces held their ground. Their heroic stand at Gapyeong was instrumental in blunting the enemy offensive and preventing a breakthrough on the United Nations Command's central front, which ultimately saved Seoul from capture.

Their courage helped turn the tide of the war and forged bonds of friendship that endure to this day. We remember their service and reaffirm our commitment to the U.S.-ROK alliance and the cause of peace and security on the Korean Peninsula.

Flames rose from a simulated aircraft wreckage site as emergency vehicles converged from every direction. Nearby, volunteer victims waited for treatment, firefighters coordinated rescue efforts, and emergency managers tracked the situation from the Emergency Operations Center.

The Utah Air National Guard joined local, state, and federal partners May 28 during Exercise Green Thunder 2026, a full-scale mass-casualty exercise at Salt Lake City International Airport designed to strengthen regional emergency response coordination and readiness.

The exercise simulated a catastrophic aircraft crash involving civilian and military passengers, requiring responders to manage fire suppression, casualty care, security operations, emergency communications, public information, and command-and-control functions.

Airmen from across the Utah Air National Guard took part in fire emergency services, medical response, security forces, emergency management, and public affairs operations. The exercise also activated emergency operations personnel, allowing agencies to practice information sharing and decision-making during a complex incident.

"Exercises like this give us the opportunity to train alongside the partners we would work with during a real-world emergency," said Col. Jeffrey Gould, 151st Wing commander. "Building those relationships before a crisis occurs improves our ability to respond quickly and effectively when lives are on the line."
